Choosing the Right Phone Number for Your SMS Campaign

Before You Start

Before choosing the number for your campaign,  keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Toll-Free numbers: One number per campaign

  • 10DLC numbers: Best for larger campaigns

    • Recommended ratio: 1 10DLC phone number per 1,000 leads

These guidelines help distribute messaging traffic evenly and improve message delivery.

Phone Number Types

Meera supports two types of phone numbers for messaging campaigns.

Type Best For Key Details
Toll-Free National or brand-level campaigns Uses prefixes like 800, 888, or 877. Only one toll-free number can be used per campaign.
10DLC Larger campaigns or high-volume messaging A standard 10-digit local phone number designed for business messaging. Multiple numbers can be used per campaign.

10DLC Messaging Limits

For campaigns using 10DLC numbers, messaging throughput may also be influenced by your brand registration score, which is assigned during the carrier registration process.

Businesses with a lower brand score may experience messaging limitations, including reduced sending speeds or throughput. This may impact how quickly messages are sent during large campaigns.

If you would like to learn more about your brand registration score or messaging limits, please contact your Customer Success Manager.

How to Choose the Right Number Type

Selecting the appropriate number type depends on the size and goals of your campaign.

Use a Toll-Free number if:
  • You want one number for the entire campaign

  • Your campaign is national or brand-focused

  • Your messaging volume is low to moderate

  • Your brand score is low
    • Tip: If your brand score is low, using a Toll-Free number may help your messages send more consistently.

Use 10DLC numbers if:

  • Your campaign targets larger lead lists

  • You expect higher messaging volume

  • You want to distribute messages across multiple numbers to improve deliverability

Recommended Setup for 10DLC Campaigns

To ensure optimal campaign performance:

  • Use at least two 10DLC numbers per campaign

  • Maintain a ratio of one phone number per 1,000 leads

Following these recommendations helps:

  • Distribute messaging traffic evenly

  • Reduce the likelihood of carrier filtering

  • Improve message delivery and campaign success

Example

If your campaign includes 5,000 leads, you should plan to use approximately 5 phone numbers. Using multiple numbers helps ensure messages are sent efficiently and reduces the risk of carrier filtering.

Common Questions

  • Can I use both Toll-Free and 10DLC numbers in the same campaign?

No. Each campaign can use either one Toll-Free number or multiple 10DLC numbers, but not both.

  • Can I reuse the same number across multiple campaigns?

This depends on your campaign configuration and use case. Please reach out to your Customer Success Manager for more info.

  • What happens if I use too few numbers for a large campaign?

Sending a large volume of messages from too few numbers may increase the risk of carrier filtering or delivery delays.

  • Can I switch from 10DLC to Toll-Free later?

Yes. If your campaign requirements change, contact your Customer Success Manager and our team can help update your phone number configuration.

  • Can I choose a specific phone number or area code?
Yes. For 10DLC numbers, you can often request a specific area code, depending on availability.

For Toll-Free numbers, available numbers are assigned from inventory and specific numbers may not always be guaranteed.
